Therapeutic Action

Third generation cephalosporin antibacterial

Indications

In hospitalised neonates:

Bacterial meningitis, in combination with another antibacterial

Urinary infection

Pneumonia

Gonococcal conjunctivitis

Instructions for use

  • IM or slow IV injection (3 to 5 minutes): reconstitute the powder vial with 2 ml water for injection.
  • IV infusion (20 to 60 minutes): reconstitute the powder vial in 0.9% NaCl or 5% dextrose.

For pneumonia in neonates, prefer ampicillin + gentamicin.

For gonococcal conjunctivitis in neonates, use cefotaxime only if ceftriaxone is not available or contraindicated.
