Definition
An obstetrical hand-held instrument that is used for crushing the foetal head after perforation to facilitate the delivery of a dead or anomalous (abnormal) foetus.
It typically has a scissors-like design and is commonly referred to as forceps. It has very strong handles that can be mechanically closed (to exert the necessary pressure) with a screw thread and wing nut clamp at the proximal end. The distal working end has robust curved and serrated jaws that grasp and crush the foetal head.
