Obstetrical vacuum extractor (Medela)
Definition
An assembly of hand-operated devices designed to facilitate the delivery of a foetus during vaginal childbirth by enabling traction to be applied to the foetal head by means of a suction cup that is attached to the scalp. It typically consists of a cup with a soft inner liner to prevent tissue damage, a hand-operated pump, and a handle used to apply traction. It is typically used for dystocia, uterine inertia, maternal exhaustion, maternal/foetal distress.

Hand-operated obstetrical vacuum extractor composed of:
- 3 stainless steel anterior suction cups (Bird)
- diameter: 40, 50 and 60 mm
- with separate suction and traction port
- with traction chain
- autoclavable
- 10 bottom plates in polypropylene for each size of metal suction cup
- 2 anterior silicone suction cups (Silc cup®)
- autoclavable
- diameter: 50 mm (blue) and 60 mm (yellow)
- provided with handle and 150 cm silicone tube
- 1 hand-operated aspiration device including:
- 1 manual aspiration pump
- 1 polypropylene collecting bottle 500 ml with manometric cap + 1 spare bottle
- 1 manometer
- 1 plastic covered basket for the bottle
- silicone aspiration tube for connecting the bottle to the cup, internal Ø 6.5 mm: 1.5 m and 3 m extra
- 5 locking rings for tubing
- 1 spare gasket
- 2 stainless steel traction handles with hook to attach to the suction cup.

Read the manufacturer's instructions before use!
MSF recommends to use the manual obstetrical vacuum extractor "Kiwi OmniCup®", tested in the field, since it is easier to use (see related articles).
The "modified vacuum extractor by Bird" is stronger and more indicated for difficult deliveries, but it requires the presence of an assistant.
All the components can be sterilized by steam.
