EMERGENCY FOOD RATION

Definition

Emergency food rations are compressed energy biscuits that contain all the macro- and micronutrients needed to maintain body functions.

It is not a therapeutic food product, but a nutritional supplement intended to replace or supplement a general food ration when population is not able to cook due to a lack of access to basic facilities (clean water, cooking equipment) in the first phase of an emergency (natural or man-made disasters...).

Can also be used to a complement food ration (used as snacks) to provide vitamins and minerals in regions/population where diet is subjected to nutritional deficiencies.

Can be air dropped at various altitudes, even without a parachute (no major damage has been reported following drops made at 183 m without a parachute).

Suitable for collective structures (hospitals, dispensaries…) as well as for families.

Caution! Emergency food rations are not therapeutic foods and should not be used in the treatment of severe acute malnutrition.

Packaging & Labelling

Primary and secondary packaging must protect the hygienic and nutritional qualities of the product during transport, handling, storage under MSF field conditions.

  • Primary packaging (unit packaging): cardboard box of 500 g containing 9 bars packed in a vacuum pack
  • Secondary packaging: carton of 24 boxes

Instructions for use

This product can be consumed directly as a biscuit or crumbled into drinking water and consumed as a porridge.

Its packaging facilitates direct consumption.

Storage

  • Vacuum packaging means that the product is stable for 5 years after the manufacturing date stated on the packaging, whatever the storage conditions.
  • The integrity of the packaging is essential.
  • After opening the aluminium packaging, the product should be consumed within 2 weeks.
  • The strength of the packaging and the low moisture content of the product limit the risk of degradation.
  • The carton must be strong, able to be stacked to a height of 2.4 m.
