MONITOR CARD (3M) cold chain

Definition

Card with irreversible temperature indicator which enables verification of cold chain quality from vaccine manufacture until administration by recording exposure to temperatures above 10 ºC.

Specifications

Double-sided card equipped with a heat-sensitive indicator with 4 windows (A, B, C and D):

  • When the indicator is exposed to temperatures above 10 ºC, windows A, B and C gradually and irreversibly turn blue.
  • When the indicator is exposed to temperatures above 34 ºC, window D irreversibly turns blue within two hours.

Comes in English, French, Spanish and Russian versions. Other languages are available by special order.

Instructions for use

On departure, the supplier should:

  • put the card in a refrigerator at least 2 hours before activating it
  • fill in the bottom part of the card
  • activate the indicator
  • pack the cold chain monitor card with the vaccines (one per batch of 3000 doses).

At each level of the cold chain, the storekeeper should fill in the top part of the card:

  • date in and out
  • reading registered by the indicator (A, B, C or D)
  • location of the store.

On arrival, the card can be read to check the performance of the cold chain.

Precautions for Use

The 3M card has a 2-year lifespan. The expiry date is indicated only on the box, not on the card itself.

Should ideally be stored in a air-conditioned place.

Vaccines often carry their own VVM (vaccines vial monitor). The 3M card is only a back-up.
