VASELINE

Definition

A translucent jelly made from a mixture of mineral oils and waxes that create a semisolid, jelly-like substance. It is used as a lubricant or protective ointment.

  • It acts as a skin barrier to keep out dirt and retain moisture, helps prevent chafing and diaper rash by reducing irritation, supports skin healing and prevents peeling, and may help manage eczema by moisturising at-risk newborns.
  • It is also used as lubricant for autoclave cover

It is recognised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an approved over-the-counter skin protectant and is still widely used in cosmetic skin care.
