Valid Article
VACCINE MENINGITIS A CONJUGATE 3-24 months
CAUTION
This multidose vaccine is worded and codified by unit (= 1 dose) to make the order.
Full Name
MenAfriVac 5µg®
Therapeutic Action
Freeze-dried vaccine inducing the production of bactericidal antibodies specific to the capsular polysaccharides of Neisseria meningitidisserogroup A.
Indications
Routine immunisation against meningitis due to Neisseria meningitidis group A in children from 3 to 24 months of age.
In mass immunisation campaigns targeting children over one year of age, it is recommended to use a conjugate vaccine, preferably the meningococcal ACYWX vaccine (MenFive®) as first choice.
The countries that have already introduced a monovalent meningococcal A conjugate vaccine into their routine programme should progressively switch to MenFive® vaccine.
The vaccine needs to be registered in the country.
Instructions for use
Reconstitute the powder vial with the diluent supplied by the manufacturer.
1 dose = 0.5 ml reconstituted suspension = 5 µg meningococcal polysaccharide
Must be given as IM injection into the anterolateral part of the thigh in children < 2 years or into the deltoid muscle in children ≥ 2 years.
According the schedule recommended in the country:
- children aged 3-9 months: 2 doses at least 8 weeks apart
- children aged 9-24 months: 1 single dose
Do not forget to order the diluent (3-24 m) together with the vaccine!
Orders are always done in number of doses and not in number of vials! (See Preliminary remarks on Vaccines)
Precautions for Use
As with all injectable vaccines and/or immunoglobulins, appropriate medical treatment should always be readily available in case of rare anaphylactic reactions following the administration of the product.
Storage
- Do not freeze.
- Powder: between 2ºC and 8°C - Protect from sunlight
- Diluent: cold chain is not required for storage. However, at least 12 hrs before reconstitution of the vaccine, the diluent must be refrigerated between 2ºC and 8ºC so that the diluent and lyophilised powder are at the same temperature (a thermic shock during reconstitution could reduce the vaccine efficacy).
- Vaccine reconstituted: between 2°C and 8°C for 6 hrs maximum, protected from the light
- MenAfriVac 5µg®vaccine is not pre-qualified for CTC (Controlled Temperature Chain).
- The vaccine vial monitor (VVM) is mandatory on each vaccine.
