VACCINE RABIES

Therapeutic Action

Freeze-dried vaccine containing inactivated rabies virus.

Vaccine prepared from cell cultures in embryonated eggs or purified cells (CCEEVs):

  • human diploid-cells (HDCV)
  • purified Vero-cells (PVRV)
  • purified chick embryo-cells (PCEC)

Indications

Pre-exposure prophylaxis for individuals living in isolated areas where there is a known risk of rabies, or in areas with a high risk of rabies transmission.

Post-exposure prophylaxis for anyone who has been bitten by a suspected animal, following assessment by a medical doctor.

Instructions for use

Reconstitute the powder vial with the diluent supplied by the manufacturer.

Must be given by IM route.

For the monodose vaccine (without diluent), do not forget to order the diluent together with the vaccine!

The different CCEEV vaccines can be used interchangeably without any safety concerns or loss of efficacy.

Precautions for Use

Do not administer into the gluteal muscle.

Avoid using vaccines prepared from animal nerve tissue (NTVs), as they are less immunogenic than CCEEV vaccines and may cause severe adverse reactions.

As with all injectable vaccines and/or immunoglobulins, appropriate medical treatment should always be readily available in case of rare anaphylactic reactions following the administration of the product.

Storage

  • Do not freeze.
  • Powder: between 2°C and 8°C - Protect from sunlight
  • Diluent: if not co-packed, cold chain storage is not required. However, at least 12 hours before reconstitution of the vaccine, the diluent must be refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C to ensure that both the diluent and the lyophilised powder are at the same temperature (a thermic shock during reconstitution could reduce the vaccine efficacy).
  • Reconstituted vaccine: use immediately.
