Synonym: Penicillin G procaine
Therapeutic Action
Long-acting penicillin antibacterial (12 to 24 hours)
Equimolar compound of benzylpenicillin and procaine
Indications
Congenital syphilis
Diphtheria, when oral treatment is not possible.
Instructions for use
- 0.6 MIU = 600 mg procaine benzylpenicillin to be reconstituted with the diluent supplied (4 ml water for injection)
- 1.2 MIU = 1.2 g procaine benzylpeniciilin to be reconstituted with the diluent supplied (5 ml water for injection)
Must be given as IM injection only.
Procaine benzylpenicillin became non-standard due to supply issues. Short-acting benzylpenicillin (peni G) is more widely used and is an alternative.
Precautions for Use
Never administer by IV injection or infusion.
Do not confuse with benzylpenicillin (peni G) administered by IV route.
