Therapeutic Action
Anti-infective for systemic use
Antibiotic of the group of isoxazolyl (anti-staphylococcal) penicillins
Active against Gram-positive bacteria
Indications
Empiric treatment of non-severe skin infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing Staphylococci and Streptococci, such as impetigo.
Oral alternative in the treatment of milder staphylococcal infections (excluding pneumonia or bone/joint infections, and excluding MRSA/MRCoNS).
Instructions for use
Must be taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water (to reduce the risk of oesophageal pain), at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Do not lay down immediately after taking flucloxacillin.
The dosage should be based on the susceptibility of the causative organisms, the severity and site of the infection, and the patient's condition.
Flucloxacillin is preferred to cloxacillin for the same indications due to better oral absorption.
Flucloxacillin may be used as an alternative to cloxacillin in case of supply constraints.
