CALCIUM HYPOCHLORITE HTH 65%, granules

Definition

Disinfectant used for:

  • equipment and linen
  • floors and surfaces
  • water.

Please be aware that whenever possible NaDCC should be used instead of HTH.

Specifications

  • Available chlorine (by weight): 65%
  • Water (by weight): 5.5 - 8.5%
  • Iron (by weight as Fe): 0.05 %

Packaging

450 g plastic container, 9 containers per box.

The chlorine content should be marked on the packaging, expressed in % of available chlorine.

Instructions for use

Strength of solutions is expressed in terms of available chlorine content (either in g or mg per litre, in parts per million (ppm), or as a percentage).

=> 1 mg/litre = 1 ppm = 0.0001%

A plastic measure (15 g) is included in the chlorination kit and the disinfection modules.

Disinfection of medical equipment

  • Prefer Surfanios® for basic disinfection of surfaces (floors, biomedical equipment).
  • Prefer Hexanios® for pre-disinfection of surgical equipment and basic disinfection of small medical devices.

(See Medical Catalogue, Volume 1, DDIS family)

General disinfection and water treatment

See "Public Health Engineering In Precarious Situations", MSF, Draft 2010:

  • TB 2.19 Chlorine generating products
  • TB 2.20 Preparation and use of chlorine solutions for disinfection
  • TB 2.21 Batch chlorination of drinking water

Remark

Use a pool-tester to check the presence of residual chlorine. See "Public Health Engineering In Precarious Situations", MSF, Draft 2010:

  • TB 2.22 Monitoring chlorination

Storage

Store in a dry and well-ventilated place. Ensure containers are properly resealed after use.

Keeps well (loss of 2 - 5% of available chlorine per year in good storage conditions).

Transport

Packaging and international transportation are regulated:

  • UN2880
  • requires specific packaging and labelling until final destination.

Precautions for use

  • Prepare solutions in non-metal containers, immediately before use.
  • Avoid inhaling vapour and dust when handling calcium hypochlorite
  • Do not expose to a naked flame, and do not incinerate.
  • Never mix NaDCC solution with calcium hypochlorite powder: the mixture undergoes a chemical reaction and may explode!
  • Do not mix with detergents since toxic chlorine gas could be released.
  • Do not mix with acid solutions since this releases toxic chlorine gas.
