Therapeutic Action

Short-acting hypnotic and sedative with anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant effect.

Derivative of the benzodiazepine group

Indications

Sedation of adult and paediatric patients as a component of anaesthesia or during treatment in a critical care setting.

First-line treatment for seizures in children, administered by buccal or intranasal route when IV access with diazepam is not possible.

First-line treatment for seizures in adults, administered by IM, IV, or intranasal route.

Management of patients with acute severe agitation or severe behavioural disturbance in emergency settings.

Instructions for use

For intranasal administration in children, it is recommended to use a mucosal atomization device.

Midazolam should only be administered by personnel specifically trained in the detection and management of airway obstruction, hypoventilation and apnoea, including maintenance of cardiopulmonary function, and with experience in cardiovascular resuscitation.

A benzodiazepine reversal agent (flumazenil DINJFLUM1A) should be immediately available during the administration of midazolam.

Distribution to be controlled: narcotics register or supervision of amounts in and out, and storage under lock and key. (Cf Introduction: Narcotic and psychotropic medicines under international control).

Precautions for Use

Caution! Do not confuse with the 5mg/ml midazolam concentration, which is reserved for continuous IV infusion in intensive care units.
