PHYTOMENADIONE (vitamin K1)
Therapeutic Action
Vitamin K, anti-haemorrhagic
Indications
Prophylaxis and treatment of haemorrhagic disease of the newborn
Instructions for use
Two different presentations are available for different indications:
- Oral: 10 mg/ml solution in 1 ml ampoule. It is recommended to give vitamin K1 (10 mg/day PO) to pregnant women on rifampicin treatment during the last two weeks of pregnancy to prevent haemorrhagic disease of the newborn.
- Injectable (IM route): 10 mg/ml solution in 0.2 ml ampoule (= 2 mg/amp). Indicated for the prevention and treatment of haemorrhagic disease of the newborn.
Both presentations are mixed micelles solutions and are supplied with an oral dosing syringe.
Mixed micelles are composed of glycocholic acid (bile acid) and lecithin in an aqueous solution allowing the solubilisation of vitamin K and, therefore, an oral absorption equivalent to that by injection.
For this reason, both presentations can be administered either by ORAL or INJECTABLE (intramuscular) route.
