CAUTION
The multidose vaccines are worded and codified by unit (= 1 dose) to make the order easier.
Therapeutic Action
Recombinant, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) (purified), adsorbed vaccine
Indications
Active immunisation against infection caused by hepatitis B virus.
The multidose presentation is intended for vaccination of :
- newborns in maternity wards
- staff or teams if the number of people to be vaccinated is high (> 5 people)
- persons treated for sexual violence if the number of people to be vaccinated is high (> 5 persons)
Remark: Never hesitate to open a vial even if there is only one eligible person to be vaccinated and only multi-dose vials are available.
Orders are always done in number of doses and not in number of vials! (See Preliminary remarks on Vaccines)
The single-dose (monodose) presentation is intended for specific contexts where consumption is very low.
Vaccine sometimes supplied by the Ministry of Health of the country concerned.
Instructions for use
Suspension in liquid form
Shake the vial before use to homogenise the suspension.
Must be given by IM route into the anterolateral aspect of the thigh (in infants) or the deltoid muscle.
Dosage varies according to age and the vaccine used. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Children: one dose = 5 to 10 micrograms
Adults: one dose = 10 to 20 micrograms
Follow the national immunisation schedule, or if not available, the WHO schedule.
Precautions for Use
As with all injectable vaccines and/or immunoglobulins, appropriate medical treatment should always be readily available in case of rare anaphylactic reactions following the administration of the product.
Storage
- Keep refrigerated between 2ºC and 8ºC - Protect from sunlight
- Do not freeze.
- For multidose vials, refer to the WHO policy on the use of opened vials of vaccine.
