Definition

Digital plates use storage phosphors to capture and retain a latent image related to an exposure of ionizing radiation. This latent image is read by scanning with lasers, producing a digital image.

Phosphor screens can be erased and reused thousands of times. They require less exposure time than film and provide faster image access.

The device is transported and shielded from room light by a cassette.

Precautions for Use

A phosphor screen does have a limited life-span of approximately 5000 exposures. After heavy use the screens will start to show wear which will produce image artefacts. Once a screen begins to show wear or is damaged, it must be replaced.

It is recommended that at least one screen of each size is kept at each project site as a back-up replacement screen in case of damage or expiry of the old screen.

Maintenance

Regularly check the wear and cleanliness condition of the storage phosphor screen. Handle phosphor screens with care.

Monthly clean:

  • Make sure hands are clean and dry.
  • Hold screens by the edges and by the backside, avoid contact with the plates white (phosphor) side.
  • Wipe the screen with a non-abrasive cloth (such as gauze) and use a mild cleaning fluid that is NOT alcohol based.
  • Thoroughly dry the screen with a clean cloth before placing it back inside the cassette.

A damaged phosphor screen must be replaced.

Storage

  • Normal temperature operating range is -5 to 25°C, although lower temperatures for short periods (several hours) will have no detrimental effect on the screens.
  • In very hot environments, care should be exercised in bending or flexing the screens as the phosphor layer could crack at temperatures exceeding 65°C.
  • Do not store cassettes with storage phosphor screens inside the x-ray room as they are very sensitive to scattered radiation.

Waste management

These screens, when discarded, are a hazardous waste due to the leachability of barium.

Before discarding these screens, inquire about national regulations in force or contact your logistics department for advice.
