(ESU) ACTIVE MONOPOLAR ELECTRODE

Definition

The active electrode delivers the RF current from the generator to the surgical site. The current to tissue action at the tip of the active electrode is high electron flow over a small area. As resistance is encountered heat is produced. The current density differs for each tip based on the size and shape of the tip.

With monopolar electrosurgery, a probe electrode (pencil-like) is used to apply the electrosurgical energy to the target tissue to achieve the desired surgical effect. The current then passes through the patient to a return electrode and then back to the ESU generator to complete the circuit. Reusable monopolar electrodes have to be used with a (reusable) handpiece. The diameter of the standard shaft is 2.4 mm

Active electrode tips made from stainless steel have the disadvantage of eschar build up which results in increased resistance. This resistance interferes with the desired tissue effect and can become a fire hazard. These tips have to be cleaned with a scratch pad.

Precautions for Use

The electrode with the proper shaft diameter must be firmly attached to the handle tip.

Active HF instruments and HF handles must not be placed on the patient in order to avoid any injuries in case of involuntary HF activation.

Maintenance

The reusable electrode-handpiece must be cleaned and sterilized by steam autoclave after each use. Recommended by the manufacturer for 50 cycles at 121 degrees for 20 minutes, after proper cleaning and drying.
