PRESSURE CUFF

Definition

A manually-operated device designed to increase the rate of an intravenous solution or transfusion given to a patient by applying pressure directly to the infusion / transfusion bag.

The main design: a flexible bag made of textile or clear plastic with a pocket to hold the infusion bag and an inflatable pressure chamber or cuff that, when inflated, applies the desired pressure. A squeeze bulb for the operator to create the pressure and a pressure gauge are included.

Instructions for use

Before inserting the flexible bag into the cuff, make sure it is completely deflated.

Slide the bag into the cuff, perforation stopper first. This stopper has to extend beyond the transparent material. Insert the Velcro strip through the plastic tab at the top of the bag, then fold it back and stick it to the other side of the Velcro strip. This allows the height of the serum/blood bag behind the window, to be adjusted.

After connecting the bag to the infusion set, adjust to the rate of flow by gradually inflating the bag (turn the pressure release valve clockwise). The pressure gauge is used to monitor the pressure exerted on the serum/blood bag by the cuff.

To remove the bag when the perfusion/transfusion has been completed, DEFLATE THE CUFF BY OPENING THE PRESSURE RELEASE VALVE.

Maintenance

  • Disconnect the bulb and the pressure gauge from the black tubes and undo the Velcro fastening
  • Slide the inflatable rubber bag out of the cuff
  • Wash the cuff at maximum 40º C
