Precautions for Use

  • When removing the cover, always tilt and angle the cover away from yourself or any other people in the area to prevent injury from hot steam.
  • Never heat the autoclave without water, before carrying out sterilization once more, the autoclave should be refilled with water but never reuse the water held in the removable lower tank since it is particularly limestone concentrated.
  • Never pour cold water into or onto the warm autoclave!
  • Use FILTERED water, non salt, low or non chlorinated, and preferably soft water such as rainwater
  • Place the autoclave on a stable surface: have a tripod made locally in wrought iron, with retaining lugs round the surface on which the autoclave sits.

Maintenance

  • Remove limescale build-up from time to time by heating the autoclave with vinegar diluted with water.
  • Never use chlorinated products to clean the autoclave.
  • Metal-to-metal seal
    • Must be lubricated periodically: apply a small amount of lubricant every third or fourth use.
    • Wipe off the seal with a clean towel to remove any build-up of foreign material or particles trapped in the lubricant.
  • Pressure gauge
    • Do not immerse the pressure gauge in water when cleaning.
    • Make certain the opening into the gauge on the underside of the cover is open and free of any foreign matter.
  • Control valve: periodic cleaning is recommended. Unscrew the “knurled top” portion and clean thoroughly in hot soapy water.
  • Air exhaust tube:
    • Must be frequently checked to make sure that air passes freely through it: blow air through the tube at least once a month.
    • Clean out the tube by using a small diameter wire, running it through the entire length of the tube several times.
    • If corrosion or a buildup of foreign material is noticed, the tube needs to be replaced.
  • Excess pressure valve: to be replaced every three years in normal service.
  • The overpressure plug (silicone, red in colour, on the top surface of the sterilization cover)
    • It is recommended to replace the overpressure plug every 6 months. It should always be replaced whenever it becomes hard or deformed.
    • At least every month, during period of use, the opening in the cover where the overpressure plug fits should be checked (no foreign material residue, buildup of grease) and cleaned with hot soapy water (additional to the daily cleaning).

Storage

If the autoclave is not going to be used again, before putting the unit away, all water should be emptied from the unit and the unit be thoroughly dried inside. It is recommended that the water be poured out while the bottom is still warm. For storage purposes, it is only necessary to slightly tighten the wing nuts enough to hold the cover on the vessel. When storing, it is recommended that the control valve be left in a vertical position.

MSF requirements

Suitable for health centres and small hospitals (up to 100 beds), or for large hospitals, either to supplement a 90 l autoclave, or for decentralized sterilization in hospital departments.

This type of autoclave is distributed by UNICEF and is found nearly everywhere, so spare parts can be obtained more easily locally.
