Obstetrical forceps, Suzor

Definition

A scissors-like obstetrical instrument used to assist the birth of the foetus during difficult vaginal deliveries. It is designed with two curved blades that are introduced separately and then connected to a handle to exert traction on the foetal head or to rotate the foetal head in order to facilitate its passage through the birth canal.

Synonym

Birthing forceps

Specifications

The 16 cm long transverse articulation bar is attached to the distal ends of the handles. The handles spread further apart than the spoons, so that the instrument converges towards the fetal head. The traction is done through the hands holding the handles directly.

Technical specifications

  • Atraumatic spoons
  • Length: 40 cm
  • Adjustable width with screw system at base and at mid-height
  • Material: martensitic steel

Instructions for use

Should be ordered with a sterilization basket (see related articles below).

Precautions for Use

The obstetrical forceps should be used only in case of contra-indication of the vacuum extractor (e.g. face presentation, breech presentation with head retention) or difficulties.

Training in the use of Suzor forceps requires extended mentoring in order to reduce obstetric anal sphincter injuries.

MSF requirements

The instrument recommended by MSF for instrumental extractions is the VACUUM EXTRACTOR.
