Indications

Implementation of an isolation unit for confirmed and suspected cases of haemorrhagic fever within a pre-existing healthcare facility during a confirmed epidemic of Ebola-type haemorrhagic fever.

Specifications

Kit composed of different modules designed to support the management of a haemorrhagic fever epidemic, including the setup of an isolation unit, outreach activities, surveillance, and the management of suspected, confirmed or deceased cases.

A specialised epidemic response team is required. The opening of an isolation unit requires the order of a complete ISOLATION kit (KMEDKEBO15-). Renewable supplies necessary for the functioning of the unit must be ordered as quickly as possible.

This kit allows to start the activities and to continue them for 2 weeks, while waiting the reception of the order of renewable supplies, which must be delivered to the logistic team as soon as possible.

Components

KIT, VHF, ISOLATION & PATIENT CARE, 1 team / 15 days

  • MEDICINES (including regulated, cold chain and regulated transport medicines): all medicines required for the medical management of patients. Some medicines require cold chain transport (e.g. oxytocin, dexamethasone, etc.)
  • MEDICAL EQUIPMENT: all equipment necessary for operations within the isolation unit. It contains also a small sterilisation module to sterilise the delivery or manual vacuum aspiration set if required inside the structure.
  • PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: calculated to provide two weeks of protection for the entire staff working in the isolation unit, including water and sanitation personnel and logisticians.
  • LOGISTIC and SANITATION (including regulated transport items): all items required for the installation and daily functioning of the isolation unit by the logistics and water/sanitation teams. Includes the module camp installation and boundary for the isolation unit.
  • SAMPLING: allows he collection of biological samples. It can be used either inside or outside the isolation unit. When used outside, protective equipment is included in the module.
  • LIBRARY, FORMS and STATIONERY: materials for used inside and outside the isolation unit. A printer module is also included.
  • HEALTH PROMOTION EQUIPMENT: includes material for health promotion
  • MEDICAL RENEWABLE SUPPLIES: renewable medical supplies necessary for patient management within the isolation unit.

NB: The kit also includes the necessary equipment for surveillance teams, if MSF is in charge of surveillance activities (e.g. thermometer).

NB: Oral antimalarial medicines are not included and must be ordered separately, in accordance with the national protocol. If the prevalence is unknown, calculate needs according to the number of blisters in the Basic Unit Module of the KIT, INTERAGENCY EMERGENCY HEALTH 2024, 10,000 p./3 months.

This kit is aimed to support one hospital setting and 10 primary health care facilities.

(module VHF) MODULE SUPPORT 1 HOSPITAL + 10 PHC (& regulated transport)

Contains medicines, medical equipment, protective equipment, and logistic/sanitation equipment to reinforce existing structures in the epidemic area.

(module VHF) MODULE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH (& regulated transport)

Includes all logistic, medical, and sanitation equipment for:

  • 2 teams of 4 people for the removal of up 20 bodies / 20suspected cases, and for additional activities such as:
    • ambulance team
    • burial team
    • spraying team for high-risk households
    • If more than 2 teams are required, supplementary equipment must be ordered.
  • 10 surveillance teams

(module VHF) SAMPLING (& regulated transport) AND SMALL ISOLATION

This module allows performing an exploratory mission outside the epidemic area and the short-term management of a suspected case while awaiting laboratory confirmation and/or transfer to a more appropriate structure.

This module also allows any MSF project located outside the epidemic area to manage a suspected case if necessary.

(module VHF) TRAINING MODULE

This module includes protective equipment and other articles necessary for the training of medical staff. A detailed checklist and explanatory note on training are included. This module is designed specifically for the medical staff of the isolation unit and peripheral health structures.
