INCINERATOR KIT LTI (De Montfort Mark8a) auto-combustion
Definition
Double-chamber auto-combustion incinerator made of refractory bricks, intended for the treatment of burnable medical waste.
Indications
This kit allows the construction of a De Montfort incinerator provided normal bricks and cement can be found locally.
It consists of 4 modules that can be ordered separately according to what is available in the field.
Module 1: Refractory materials
This module includes refractory bricks and cement for the construction of 1 De Montfort incinerator, as well as specific construction tools.
Module 2: Insulator - stabilizer
Vermiculite mixed with Portland cement will provide an improved insulation of the combustion chambers and give more stability to the incinerator.
Module 3: Metal works
All metal works are prefabricated (frame, ashtray, grill for ashtray, loading door). They only need to be fit together according to the instructions for assembly. Caution, these metal works were designed for the refractory bricks included in the module 1. They will not fit if bricks of a different length and/or width are used.
Module 4: Chimney
For the transport, the chimney is divided into 4 pipes of 1 meter long that have to be assembled on the spot. The module includes 2 extra pipes of 1 meter long as spare parts because the lower pipe of the chimney will endure heavy corrosion due to the high temperatures it is exposed to and will have to be replaced on a fairly regular basis.

Instructions for use
Follow the instructions precisely according to the MSF manual "Incineration in Health Structures of Low-income Countries: Construction and operation of the De Montfort Incinerator".
Make sure you hire a skilled mason, who is willing to learn and implement the specific construction rules for refractory bricks, as well as a skilled welder for the metal works if they would be manufactured locally. Both should have basic tools for their respective jobs.
The De Montfort incinerator is intended for the treatment of burnable medical waste. It must not be used for sharps, organic or hazardous waste.
The incinerator is only a part within the complete Health Care Waste Management chain.
Train the staff in the proper use of the incinerator.
Module 1 is very heavy and therefore split up into 4 pallets (with 42 refractory bricks each) to ease the manual loading and offloading and to permit the transport by pick-up.
Due to its high weight, the complete kit is sent from Europe by maritime transport. The travel period can be covered with a locally made drum volume reducer.
It is recommended to buy the needed Portland cement locally to save weight and costs. When buying Portland cement, make sure to only procure dry cement, stored properly and not longer than 6 months. Cement looses strength when stored too long (50% of its strength is lost after 24 months of storage!). Portland cement is needed for the foundation and the outer wall of the incinerator.
