A disposable undergarment (a nappy or diaper) composed by 3 layers:

• porous top-sheet: must allow liquid to flow through it, draws liquid away from the skin, so the skin is kept dry
• absorbent core (composed by a cellulose layer and a 50% cellulose-polyacrylate sodium SAP layer): takes in, distributes and holds liquid under pressure
• impermeable back sheet: keeps clothes and bedding dry

The ISO total absorbency (Rothwell test) is the maximum absorption capacity of the absorbing material in the entire urine-absorbing aid. The urine-absorbing aid is weighed dry, soaked in test liquid, drained, and weighed wet. Subtraction of the dry mass from the wet mass gives the absorption capacity.

The working absorbency is the amount of liquid the product will absorb during normal use. As a general rule, Working Absorbency is 30-50% of the ISO Total Absorbency.

Droplet scales provide the user with a quick and easy to use method of identifying the absorbency levels within a range of products. The more droplets that are filled, the more absorbent the product. It is important to note that different brands have different Droplet scales, and so comparing droplets across different brands may not show the same levels of absorbency.
