DROPPER for oral polio vaccine

Definition

Plastic device designed to draw up a small volume of liquid medicine (oral polio vaccine) for administration in drops into the mouth of the patient, usually an infant or small child. It is typically designed as a hollow tube, open at both ends, with an opening to fit he vaccine vial to the proximal end and a narrow opening at the distal end.

Instructions for use

  • Examine the vaccine vial to ensure that the vaccine is clear and transparent.
  • Remove the metal cap and rubber cork from the vaccine vial and fix the dropper to the vial.
  • Remove the dropper cap and put two drops of vaccine directly into the child's mouth.
  • Always hold the vial at an angle (see figure below) to administer the vaccine.
  • Gently press the dropper just above the dispensing nozzle with the fingers, avoiding contact with the fingernails.
  • Return the vial with the dropper to the upright position after each dose is administered.
  • Recap the dropper if time has elapsed between two consecutive administrations of the vaccine and return the vial to the cold chain.

Precautions for Use

Use the specific dropper supplied by the manufacturer.

Take care not to contaminate the dropper with the vaccinee's saliva.

Never touch the tip of the dropper and ensure that the dropper is recapped between uses.

Discard the dropper with the vaccine vial, as reusing the dropper from one vial to another can lead to cracks and leaks.

Storage

  • Below 25ºC
  • Caution! once the dropper is fixed to the vaccine vial, keep between 2ºC and 8ºC.

MSF requirements

The oral polio vaccine should only be given orally. Two drops are administered directly into the mouth from the multi-dose vial using the specific dropper supplied with the vaccine.

Use one dropper per vaccine vial.
