LARVICIDE BTI AM 65-52 (VectoBac)

Definition

Biological larvicide for control of mosquito larvae. Water Dispersible Granule (WDG) formulation of the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis, subsp. israelensis, strain AM 65-52.

Specifications

  • Biological larvicide in Water Dispersible Granule form. Granules can either be applied in two ways:
    • undiluted directly into water bodies or
    • by spraying of aqueous mixture by using mechanical cold fogging equipment.
  • Has residual effect. Extent of residual effect depends on characteristics of the water environment, the general environment and feeding habits of larvae targeted.
  • Highly specific activity on several mosquito species and black flies. Not harmful to non-target organisms
  • Toxins released by the product that are responsible for the pathogenic effect in mosquito larvae have no effect on vertebrates including fish, birds, and mammals.
  • Kills mosquito larvae quickly (2-24 hours)
  • Should be considered as a component of an integrated vector control strategy in the appropriate context.

Instructions for use

Larval control is best suited for a context where mosquito breeding sites are limited in number, relatively permanent in time and not widely dispersed. To effectively carry out larviciding activities it is necessary to locate and map all the potential breeding sites within the flight range of the vector. The product can be used either by directly applying the undiluted granules into breeding sites or by spraying an aqueous mixture by utilising motorised spraying equipment (cold foggers).

1. Direct application of undiluted granules:

Undiluted granules should be dosed using a pre- calibrated scoop or spoon. Direct application should be carried out to water storage reservoirs that have a volume capacity greater than 50 litres. Such reservoirs include drinking water containers, open irrigation tanks, lakes, ponds. The application rate to be used is 100 - 400 mg of granules/ 50 litres of water or 2- 8 g of granules/ 1000 litres of water. The exact application rate depends on the habitat conditions and the program objectives. To define the exact application rate, contact your technical referent.

2. Application by spraying of aqueous mixture by utilising cold fogging equipment:

Ground aqueous spray mix applications should be targeted to natural and artificial larval habitats which are smaller than 50 litres in volume and cover a wide area. Such habitats include covered and uncovered concrete drainage systems, trash accumulations, tyres, roof gutters, vegetation — leaf axils, tree holes, leaf litter, and ground pools.

The recommended dosage in a spray mix is 250 – 500 gram of VectoBac WG per hectare of target larval habitats. Polluted water (sewage lagoons, lagoons containing animal waste) will require higher dosages. The exact application rate depends on the habitat conditions and the program objectives. To define the exact application rate, contact your technical referent.

Precautions for Use

The product's safety data sheet indicates the product is not toxic to non- target organisms. The active ingredient Bacillus thuringiensis, subsp. israelensis, may cause skin irritation. If inhaled, the product may irritate the respiratory tract and cause symptoms similar to bronchitis.

When handling the product, standard protective measures should be followed:

  • When handling the undiluted granules or mixing the product use an FFP- 2/ N95 particle mask.
  • Wear protective clothing during handling and application (goggles, clothes covering arms and legs, gloves, FFP-2/ N95 particle mask when handling the undiluted product).
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not apply on surfaces used for preparation of food.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke during use.
  • Avoid direct contact with eyes and skin.
  • After application wash any exposed body parts and change cloths
  • Residues or discarded/ expired product should not be disposed of with regular waste. Contact your technical referent for appropriate disposal procedures.
