Therapeutic Action

Broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic

Indications

Trachoma, conjunctivitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis

Cervicitis and urethritis due to Chlamydia trachomatis, donovanosis, chancroid, early syphilis

Cholera, typhoid fever, yaws, leptospirosis, louse-borne, tick-borne relapsing fevers

Pertussis, diphtheria, pneumonia due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydophila pneumoniae

Second-line treatment of shigellosis

Streptococcal tonsillitis, acute otitis media, in penicillin-allergic patients only

Instructions for use

The oral suspension is intended for paediatric use. To be reconstituted with filtered water.

Tablets are preferred to capsules for better absorption when treatment is taken during the meals.

For the treatment of genital chlamydiosis, an antibiotic active against gonococcus (preferably cefixime) sould be associated with azithromycin, since both infections must be treated simultaneously.

Precautions for Use

Do not administer in case of allergy to azithromycin or other macrolides, and in case of severe hepatic impairment.

Do not administer simultaneously with antacids (aluminium or magnesium hydroxide, etc.). Administer 2 hours apart.
