KIT, INTERAGENCY EMERGENCY HEALTH 2018

In 2018 the new Interagency Emergency Health Kit was finalised and introduced by the WHO to replace 2011 version. MSF chose to deviate slightly by compiling their own version:

  • Phenobarbital will be kept in the kit (while in the IEHK it will be replaced by Carbamazepine).
  • The NCD (non communicable diseases) module will be optional, it will not be sent to all contexts.
  • MSF does not see the added value of an ECG - machine so it will not be included.

Indications

IEHK 2018 is designed principally to meet the first primary health-care needs of a displaced population without medical facilities.

Specifications

The term "emergency" is applied to various situations resulting from natural, political and economic disasters.

The Interagency Emergency Health Kit 2018 (IEHK 2018) is designed to meet the initial primary health care needs of a displaced population without medical facilities, or a population with disrupted medical facilities in the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster or during an emergency.

This kit is designed to provide health care for 10,000 displaced people for 3 months without impinging on the existing health facilities in the receiving area.

Components

IEHK 2018 is composed of 10 BASIC UNITS (for 1,000 people each) and 1 SUPPLEMENTARY UNIT (for 10,000 people).

BASIC UNIT

The basic unit is intended for primary health care workers with limited training. It contains oral and topical medicines, essential medical devices and simple treatment guidelines which are based on symptoms. In addition to the basic module (= module KMEDMBAS04A) there is an antimalarial module (= module KMEDMBAS04M) which is optional and must be ordered separately if needed.

The basic unit is divided into 2 modules to be ordered separately:

  • KMEDMBAS04A = 1 basic module containing medicines, medical devices: renewable supplies and equipment, stationary
  • KMEDMBAS04M = 1 specific module including rapid malaria tests and antimalarial drugs.

SUPPLEMENTARY UNIT

The supplementary unit is intended for professional health workers and physicians. It contains specific medicines and medical devices and should only be used together with one or more basic units. The supplementary unit must be completed by the optional modules, these must be ordered separately.

The supplementary unit is divided into 10 modules:

  • KMEDMSUP04A = 1 supplementary module containing medicines
  • KMEDMSUP04S1 = 1 supplementary module containing renewable supplies
  • KMEDMSUP04E = 1 supplementary module containing equipment
  • KMEDMSUP04B = 1 module with cold chain medicines
  • KMEDMSUP04C = 1 module with regulated medicines
  • KMEDMSUP04D = 1 module with items that have regulated transport and packaging
  • KMEDMSUP04M = 1 optional module with injectable antimalarial medicines and supplies.
  • KMEDMSUP04P1 = 1 optional module with post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) treatment.
  • KMEDMSUP04N = 1 optional module with NCD medicines and supplies
  • KMEDMSUP04NB = 1 optional module with NCD medicines that need cold chain.

Instructions for use

Precautions for Use

Medicines and medical devices included in this standard kit are convenient early in an emergency. For each situation, specific needs must be assessed as soon as possible to allow orders to be adapted accordingly.

Warning

  • The modules which are optional must be ordered separately on your order form. They are NOT automatically sent together with the kit.
  • Caution, the module with regulated medicines (psychotropic and narcotic drugs = KMEDMSUP04C) is never supplied in case you order the kit KMEDKEME4--. It is necessary to make a separate order with the psychotropic and narcotic drugs required and to send to your supply center an import licence from receiving National Authorities for these drugs.
  • Contact your supply centre and read the information related to psychotropic and narcotic drugs in the Medical Catalogue and order lists.
  • Condoms are not included in the kit. Do not forget to order them following the WHO formula: 25,000 for 10,000 people/month.
