Definition

Powder to reconstitute a drink for special medical purpose that can be used for both oral and enteral (by tube) feeding for patients from 13 years of age.

Specifications

This powder can be reconstituted with 2 different dilution factors to obtain either a moderate-calorie drink (1.25 kcal/ml) or a high-calorie drink (1.5 kcal/ml).

Packaging & Labelling

Primary and secondary packaging must protect the hygienic and nutritional qualities of the product during transport, handling, storage under MSF field conditions.

  • Primary packaging (unit packaging): 800 g tin
  • Secondary packaging: 6 tins per carton (4.8 kg net; 6.1 kg gross, 17dm3)

Instructions for use

Preparation and Reconstitution of drink powder

  • Preparation should take place in a clean environment on cleaned and disinfected work surfaces.
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, and dry with a clean cloth or single-use towel.
  • Water used to prepare powdered infant formula should be boiled for 2 minutes, then cooled to 60-70°C before adding the powder. Use a digital food grade thermometer to check the temperature of the water.
  • Pour the exact quantity of water (at 70°C) required (see below) into a cleaned and sterilised recipient. Use a 100 ml measuring jug or a 100 ml graduated glass beaker with spout.
  • Add the required amount of powder (see table below).

  • Mix the preparation with a sterilised utensil until complete dilution.
  • Remark on the measuring spoon:
    • use the measuring spoon provided in the tin. Do NOT use a measuring spoon from another product or manufacturer.
    • put it directly back into the tin, do not wash it.
    • the measuring spoon should not get wet; if it does, dry it well before putting it back in the tin.

Administration

  • Enteral use:
    • pour the prescribed amount of reconstituted ME or HE formulation into the patient's pouch, label accordingly and administer via nasogastric tube.
    • use within 6 hrs at room temperature.
  • Oral use:
    • cool to feeding temperature (about 37°C).
    • use within 2 hrs.

Conservation after reconstitution

  • The reconstituted powdered drink (liquid) should preferably be consumed immediately and always within 2 hrs (oral use) or 6 hours (enteral use by tube) after reconstitution.
  • If it is not possible to consume immediately, keep the preparation refrigerated (do not exceed 5ºC). Stir the preparation before consumption.
  • Refrigerated preparation should be consumed within 24 hrs.
  • Discard any refrigerated preparation that has not been consumed within 24 hrs.

Storage

  • Below 30ºC
  • Shelf life: 24 months
  • After opening, the product should be consumed within 4 weeks.
  • Tightly close the tin with the lid after each use.

Caution! The main risk of deterioration is a loss of nutritional and organoleptic properties, due to bad storage conditions (>30°C)
