Instructions for use

Procedure in case of an accident involving cytotoxic agents

  1. Immediate response
    • Remain calm and seek help immediately
    • .Restrict access to the contaminated area
    • Do not enter or cross the danger zone
    • Fetch the cytotoxic spill box.
  2. Don personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    1. Put on the respirator
    2. Don the goggles
    3. Wear the cytostatic protective overall
    4. Put on the blue protective gloves (ensure the cuff covers the end of the overall sleeve)
    5. Put on the overboots
    6. Pull the green protective gloves over the blue gloves.
  3. Secure and mark the scene of the accident
    • Mark and cordon off the scene of the accident to prevent spread
    • Use the marker pen to generously outline the contaminated area
    • Place the information sign to restrict entry
    • Close windows and doors and stop all pedestrian traffic through the area.
  4. Cleaning and disposal instructions
    • Cleaning must be proceed from the outside to the inside of the contaminated area
    • Glass or sharp fragments: pick up using tongs and dispose of in the cardboard waste box
    • Liquid contamination:
      • cover the spill with the ChemoSorb pad.
      • once absorbed into a jelly-like mass, pick up with wipes
      • use the scraper and scoop to collect the pad and wipes
      • dispose off materials in the cardboard box
    • Powdered contamination:
      • place Isysoft wipes dampered with distilled water over the powder
      • pick up the wipes with the scraper and scoop
      • dispose of in the cardboard box
  5. Waste disposal
    • Transparent waste bag
      • place the waste cardboard box, all auxiliary and cleaning materials, into the transparent waste bag
      • seal the bag with a cable tie
      • place the transparent waste bag into the white special waste bag
    • PPE disposal
      • carefully remove PPR in the following order:
        1. Overboots
        2. Green protective gloves
        3. Protective overall
        4. Blue cytostatic protective gloves
        5. Safety goggles
        6. Respiratory protection mask.
      • dispose of all PPE into the white special waste bag along with the transparent waste bag
      • seal the white special waste bag with the cable tie
  6. Final decontamination
    • The cordoned-off area must be thoroughly cleaned by trained personnel, following internal procedures.
  7. Reporting
    • Complete and submit a detailed accident report.

Storage

  • Store between 15ºC and 25°C - Protect from sunlight - Protect from humidity
  • Fragile article: no contact with pointed or sharp objects.
  • Shelf life: 3 years from the date of manufacture.

MSF requirements

All areas where cytotoxic substances are used should have a cytotoxic spill kit available at all times.
