Therapeutic Action
Ion exchange resin, consisting of sodium polystyrene sulfonate,
which removes potassium from the intestine in exchange for sodium ions.
Indications

Instructions for use
Powder for suspension for oral or rectal administration only.
Provided with a 15 g dosing spoon.
Posology
Adults
- Oral (preferred route) or nasogastric/orogastric tube:
- 15–30 g once; up to 4 times daily based on potassium levels.
- Maximum daily dose: 60 g/day.
- Rectal (retention enema):
- 30–50 g every 6 hours as needed
- Administer as a warm emulsion (at body temperature) in 150-200 ml of water or 10% dextrose.
- Agitate gently the emulsion during administration to maintain the suspension
- Retain enema for as long as possible (4 to 10 hours), followed by a cleansing enema.
Children
- Oral (preferred route) or nasogastric/orogastric tube:
- 0.5-1 g/kg body weight daily in divided doses
- Maximum daily dose: 60 g/day
- Rectal:
- Use a dose equivalent to the oral dose
- Mix each 1 g of resin with 5ml of water or 10% glucose. Follow the same procedures as for adults for administration
- Irrigate colon to remove resin after 8-12 hours
Neonate
- Rectal route only:
- 0.5-1 g/kg body weight daily
- Mix each 1 g of resin with 5ml of water or 10% glucose. Follow the same procedures as for adults for administration

- The use of this medication in neonates is not common, contact your OC Paediatric advisor for advice
Remarks
- Avoid concomitant administration with sorbitol.
- Use the spoon provided with the tin
- Ensure proper irrigation of the colon after rectal administration to remove the resin.
- Oral administration:
- Mix the required quantity of powder with water (50-100 ml). Do not mix with fruit juices (high potassium content).
- Prepare fresh suspensions, do not store beyond 24 hours.
- Administer at least 3 hours before or 3 hours after other oral medications
- If administered via a nasogastric/orogastric tube, flush with 25-50 ml of (sterile or drinking) water after administration to prevent obstruction of the tube
Precautions for Use
Contraindicated in patients with:
- serum potassium <5 mmol/l
- obstructive bowel disease
Do not administer orally to neonates.
Storage
- Store below 25ºC - Protect from sunlight
- Discard any prepared suspension after 24 hours.
