PLASTIC SHEETING, white

Definition

Woven sheeting made of opaque plastic.

Many uses in emergency situations: temporary family or community shelters, latrines, foot baths in cholera camps, groundsheets for tents, room partition, protection against rain etc.

Specifications

Material

  • Woven structure: high density polyethylene (HDPE), black (provides some privacy)
  • Lamination material: low density polyethylene (LDPE), white on at least one side (reflects heat better in hot climates)
  • 6 reinforcement bands of 7.5 cm width, made of woven HDPE, laminated on both sides
  • Sheets only:
    • 1 strong aluminium eyelet every metre ± 5% on edges
    • sealed on all sides (or 2 sides heat-sealed and two sides double stitched), with nylon or HDPE rope in them

Technical specifications

  • Weight: 200g/m² ± 5% (ISO 3801), plus 10% for reinforcement bands. NB: lighter materials can also be considered provided they meet the specifications given below
  • Tensile strength:
    • outside the reinforcement bands: minimum 500N (ISO 1421)
    • within the reinforcement bands: minimum 700N (ISO 1421)
  • Tear strength outside the reinforcement bands: minimum 100N (ISO 1421)
  • Seams:
    • maximum 1 seam along the middle
    • minimum 80% of the original sheet strength in the weft direction
  • UV resistance: minimum 80% of the original sheet strength (ISO 1421) after 1500 hours UV under ASTM G53/94 and not less than 475N.
  • Temperature resistance: from -20 to +80º C
  • Flame retardant: under study (not prooven yet)
  • Width: 4 metre
  • Length: rolls of 60 m or sheets of 6 m
  • Printing:
    • manufacturer's name, month and year of production
    • markings every metre (to aid cutting)

The strongest way to attach a plastic sheet is to wrap a stone in the sheet and knot a cord around the neck.

It is also possible to use eyelets designed for this purpose (see "Related Articles" below).

Caution: plastic slackens in heat: shelters should be tightened during the day to prevent flapping.

To prevent the sheets from tearing or ripping, it is recommended:

  • not to make holes outside the reinforcement bands
  • to use a piercing tool such as an awl instead of a knife.

Repairs can be done with reinforced adhesive tape.

To make walls or fences, split the sheet lengthwise into two pieces of 2 m wide, by cutting the seam between the two central bands.

Marks every metre allow the sheet to be cut without using a tape measure.
