Indications

Phenytoin is no longer first-line treatment in the management of convulsive status epilepticus. It is replaced by either phenobarbital, levetiracetam or and sodium valproate.

Instructions for use

Must be given as slow IV infusion in 0.9% NaCl using a filter for IV line.

The solution must be clear and free of particles.

Continuous monitoring of the ECG and blood pressure is essential. Cardiac resuscitative equipment should be available.

Phenytoin can be used as an alternative to Leviteracetam, phenobarbital or sodium valproate in case of supply constraints.

Vials and ampoules are interchangeable according the availability when ordering.

Precautions for Use

Do not dilute in glucose (risk of precipitation).

Never administer by IM route.

Storage

  • Below 25ºC - Protect from sunlight
  • After dilution, use the solution immediately.
  • Discard any unused remaining solution.
