Thermosensitive codes are defined for storage and transportation temperature requirements of the products.
The product is part of at least one Kit. A kit is a collection of products (medical and/or logistic) that are needed for a certain intervention in emergency. The choice and quantity of the articles reflects the MSF protocols for this specific situation. The use of Kits allows to start an intervention without a detailed evaluation.

SUXAMETHONIUM

Full Name

Succinylcholine

Therapeutic Action

Neuromuscular blocking agent (NMBA), depolarising, with a rapid onset and short duration of action.

Indications

Induction of neuromuscular block during surgery during Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI) of anaesthesia.

In critical care, NMBAs are used in specific indications: intubation, mechanical ventilation of ARDS acute respiratory distress syndrome, acute asthma exacerbation, tetanus.

Do not routinely use for maintenance.

Suxamethonium (succinylcholine) remains the standard NMBA for RSI.

Instructions for use

Must be given as IV injection (bolus) or IV infusion.

Systematically order the corresponding pre-printed label to identify the syringe containing the product.

Rocuronium can be used as an alternative to suxamethonium (succinylcholine) in case of critical shortage or medical contraindication. In that case, dosages should be adapted accordingly (risk of prolonged neuromuscular block with rocuronium). Contact your anaesthesia advisor for more details.

Precautions for Use

Suxamethonium requires a cold chain for transport and storage. It is essential to ensure that a properly functioning cold chain is in place before ordering.

Suxamethonium is a depolarising agent and does not replace the need for non-depolarizing NMBAs (e.g. rocuronium, atracurium, vecuronium).

Caution concerning neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs)!

  • NMBAs are high-risk medications: paralysing agent that may cause respiratory distress.
  • NMBAs must only be administered in environments with equipment and monitoring for advanced airway respiratory support.
  • Syringes containing a NMBA must be identified with a standard pre-printed label corresponding to the product.
  • If not needed, the NMBA must be disposed accordingly.

Storage

  • Keep refrigerated between 2ºC and 8ºC - Protect from sunlight
  • Do not freeze.
  • Shelf-life: 18 months
  • After opening the ampoule, use the product immediately.
  • Discard any unused solution.
