Therapeutic Action

Sulphonylurea (stimulates insulin secretion)

Indications

Second-line treatment of type-2 diabetes in patients under 60 years

Prefer gliclazide for the same indication, given its lower risk of hypoglycaemia.

Instructions for use

Glibenclamide is used:

  • as monotherapy, when metformin is not tolerated or contraindicated.
  • in combination with metformin, when glycaemic control is inadequate with metformin alone.

Precautions for Use

Contraindicated in case of ketosis, porphyria.

Contraindicated during breastfeeding.

Caution must be taken in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, elderly, Ramadan or other fasting periods; stop during surgery, 1st trimester of pregnancy and trauma.
