Valid Article
Dermatome, Watson
Definition
A hand-held manual surgical instrument designed to cut from the body (harvest) thin donor slices of skin for skin grafting, or to excise small skin lesions, using a dedicated insertable blade.
Specifications
Technical specifications
- Blade holder with spiral maintaining axis and gripping handle
- Austenitic steel
- Length: 30 cm
- Left and right knurling wheels, graduated from 0.1 to 2.0 mm for adjusting the graft's thickness
- Width of cut: 155 mm maximum
Instructions for use
Single use sterile blades are to be ordered separately (see related article below). The blades are the same for the Watson dermatome and for the Humby dermatome that was previously used. Do not use blades intended for other dermatomes.
The functioning of all parts of the dermatome must be meticulously tested before each use as it determines the quality of the graft.
The dermatome must be sterilized by steam after each use. Assemble and dismantle the components with great care, without forcing.
MSF requirements
The Watson dermatome replaces the Humby dermatome since it allows better adjustment of the graft thickness.
An electrical dermatome and a skin graft expander are also included in the MSF list (see related articles below).
