Mc FARLAND TURBIDITY STANDARD

Definition

Turbidity standards consist of different mixtures of sulfuric acid and barium chloride. Turbidity is due to formation of a suspension of barium sulfate precipitate. Turbidity standards are used to obtain approximate concentrations of bacteria during preparation of microorganisms suspensions.

Components

Each standard is composed by BaSO4 of different concentration:

  • Standard 0.5 - 2.40 10-5 mol/L
  • Standard 1 - 4.80 10-5 mol/L
  • Standard 2 - 9.60 10-5 mol/L
  • Standard 3 - 1.44 10-5 mol/L
  • Standard 4 - 1.92 10-5 mol/L
  • Standard 5 - 2.40 10-5 mol/L

Packaging & Labelling

  • 6 liquid vials.
  • 17.75 mm diameter ampule
  • Transport not regulated.

Instructions for use

  • Allow to warm to room temperature, then vigorously shake the standard before use.
  • Compare the turbidity of the chosen standard and the suspension of bacteria against a black background.
  • Do not open the McFarland Standard ampules: the standard suspensions are used in the original, sealed ampules.

Storage

  • Store the tubes between +2ºC and +30°C.
  • Do not use after expiry date.
  • Do not expose to light during storage
  • Shelf life: 5 months
  • Guaranteed minimum remaining shelf life at delivery: 1/3 of the total shelf life.

MSF requirements

Used to prepare standard suspensions of bacteria during drug susceptibility testing or quality control procedures.

Turbidity standards can also be prepared in the laboratory with Barium Chloride and Sulfuric Acid (see related articles below).
