Definition

Potassium Tellurite Agar is a medium used for the differentiation of Enterococcus species.

The selectivity of this medium is due to the presence of potassium tellurite, which inhibits the growth of most bacteria associated with Enterococcus species. The differentiation of Enterococcus species is based on their capacity to reduce potassium tellurite into tellurium, which gives the colonies a black colour.

Components

Ready to use medium:

  • Meat extract 8 g/l
  • Yeast extract 5,5 g/l
  • Peptone 9,5 g/l
  • Sodium chloride 5 g/l
  • Glucose 5 g/l
  • Agar 15 g/l

Supplement: potassium tellurite (0,8%): 1 ml / 20 ml

Packaging & Labelling

Kit composed of:

  • 25 tubes of 20 ml of media
  • 25 ampules of supplement

Precautions for Use

All biological samples must be considered as potentially infectious and handled with the usual precautions (compulsory wearing of gloves, hand washing, etc.)

Storage

  • Store between 2 and 8°C
  • Do not use after expiry date
  • Shelf life: 12 months
  • Guaranteed minimum remaining shelf life at delivery: 1/3 of the total shelf life
