SEVOFLURANE, inhalation vapour, liquid, 250ml, bot.
Valid Article
SEVOFLURANE
Therapeutic Action
General inhalation anaesthetic
Halogenated methyl isopropyl ether inhalational anaesthetic which produces a rapid induction and recovery phase from anaesthesia.
Indications
Induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia by inhalation
Instructions for use
Isoflurane is the first choice inhalation anaesthetic. Isoflurane is not suitable for induction of anaesthesia (airway-irritant).
Sevoflurane is the second choice inhalation anaesthetic as it is more expensive than Isoflurane. Sevoflurane is less soluble than isoflurane and is therefore suitable for the induction of anaesthesia in children.
Both isoflurane and sevoflurane are suitable for day care anaesthesia. Sevoflurane has little advantages of less airway hyper reactivity and quicker emergence and discharge from Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
The choice between inhalation agents should take into account the characteristics of the project: patients, types of procedures, available medical equipment, staff training and other factors. Contact your anaesthesia advisor for more information.
Sevoflurane must only be administered by persons trained in the
administration of general anaesthesia.
Facilities for maintenance of a patent airway, artificial ventilation, oxygen enrichment, and circulatory resuscitation must be immediately available.
To be used with the appropriate vaporiser and anaesthetic circuit/machine.
Portable anaesthesia system Diamedica: DPA-2 & Glostavent Helix
- The Diamedica vaporiser can be used with both sevoflurane and isoflurane.
- Sevoflurane should be administered with a vaporiser calibrated specifically for sevoflurane (EANEANAA501).
- The scale of the vaporiser must be correctly calibrated from the start: according to the inhalation agent used (Sevoflurane or Isoflurane).
- Sevoflurane and isoflurane should never be mixed and the vessels (DPA) should be clearly identified: indicate the gas used on the vessel name.
- Contact your biomedical or anaesthesia advisor at the time of switching for specific manufacturer instructions.
- Follow the procedures carefully.
Precautions for Use
Sevoflurane may trigger a potentially lethal Malignant Hyperthermia in susceptible individuals.
