Therapeutic Action

Broad-spectrum bis-diguanide antiseptic for prophylaxis of omphalitis (infection of the umbilical cord)

Indications

Antisepsis and care of umbilical cord

Instructions for use

7.1 % chlorhexidine digluconate topical gel equivalent to 4% chlorhexidine

Apply 3 g of gel to the umbilical cord stump immediately after cutting the cord.

The presentation in 3-g single-dose sachet/tube is preferred to the 20-g tube to avoid contamination of open tubes.

Precautions for Use

Do not use with soap or any other class of antiseptic, e.g. polyvidone iodine (incompatibility)

Keep out of the eyes and ears.

Caution !

Serious adverse reactions have been reported due to confusion between tubes of tetracycline ointment and chlorhexidine gel. Make sure that the chlorhexidine tube is properly labelled.

Make sure the mother is trained on its use.
