MATTRESS, HD foam + memory foam

Definition

A large, durable, fabric case filled with foam, designed to be placed on a bed mattress support platform to provide a comfortable surface on which an occupant can lie, rest, and sleep, and intended to distribute body weight over a large surface area typically to help relieve pressure points for comfort and improve blood circulation to prevent pressure sores.

Synonym

bed sore mattress

Specifications

Memory foam (also known as viscoelastic foam) = heat sensitive or conforming foam with slow memory release which will model the shape of the body better than standard foam. The slower conforming properties of this foam - relative to other materials - may also enhance stability.

The density of foam is defined as its mass per unit volume= pounds per cubic foot (PCF) or kilogrammes of foam per cubic meter. Density differs as a result of the materials used in the foam construction, and the amount of polymers versus air present in the product.

Precautions for Use

Installation: respect the decompression time which is 4 hours.

Do not lay the mattress on another mattress, but on a bed base. Check the condition of the bed base, especially that it is not sagging in its center.

To identify the direction of installation of the mattress, the Pharmatex protection strip must be positioned so as to cover the zipper which is not waterproof.

Maintenance

Mattress cleaning

  • Saturated steam cleaning without addition of formalin, disinfectant or soapy water.
  • Leave to air dry.

Cleaning the Pharmatex cover

  • Removable cover, machine wash at 95°C maximum, recommended at 60°C.
  • It is advisable to close the zipper during washing and drying.
  • Daily simple maintenance of the cover: wash with a sponge and soapy water, rinse with clear water, dry well.
  • The protective cover made of Pharmatex should only be replaced once the foam is completely dry.
  • Never use chlorinated products even when diluted to clean the cover

MSF requirements

Immobilized patients should be assessed for the risk of pressure ulcers (risk assessment tools to do so exist).

In case of high risk, an alternating pressure system should be used.

The patient with middle risk should benefit from special foam mattress or overlay in memory foam or cross-cut.
