Definition

MacConkey agar media is selective and differential for the growth of gram negative bacteria while inhibiting the growth of gram positive bacteria due to bile salts mixture and crystal violet.

MacConkey agar is also used to differentiate between lactose fermenters and non-lactose fermenters.

Precautions for Use

All biological samples must be considered as potentially infectious and handled with the usual precautions (compulsory wearing of gloves, hand washing, etc.)

Storage

  • Follow the recommendations of the manufacturer for the storage
  • Do not use after expiry date
  • After preparation, store the media maximum 3 weeks between 2°C and 8°C

Waste management

After use, sterilize the cultures and all contaminated material
