PERISTOMAL DRESSING, ring

Definition

A non-sterile material in the shape of a ring. It is applied to peristomal and/or periwound skin in order to protect it from body effluent (e.g., faeces, urine, wound exudate) and/or to help secure the seal of a stomal appliance or wound drainage pouch. After application, this device cannot be reused.

Instructions for use

The barrier rings can be used to fill in or caulk uneven skin contours near the stoma to flatten the surface, hence facilitating adhesion of the ostomy bags. They also prevent ostomy drainage from getting under the ostomy barrier as they work as a barrier seal between the edge of the stoma and the base plate and allow irritated peristomal skin to heal (although the ring has no skin healing properties). They are resistant, allowing it to keep their shape longer than an ostomy paste.

They can be moulded and reshaped, may be cut, stretched, or stacked together to help improve the fit of a pouching system. They can also be used to build up soft convexity around the stoma.

The rings improve the adhesion of the base plate and decrease the problem of irritated peristomal skin. They can be also useful for increasing the adhesion of fistula/wound pouches.
