KIT NUTRITION OUTPATIENT 2021
Indications
Material to set up and manage an ambulatory therapeutic feeding centre for treating acutely malnourished children. The kit 2021 replaces the previous kit.
Specifications
This kit is composed of different parts to weigh, measure, register, and provide systematic medical and nutritional treatments to 250 malnourished children, according to MSF nutritional protocols and MSF Paediatric Guidelines. It was designed with the assumption that there is no existing or planned outpatient department (OPD) at the project, making it a self-sustaining centre for treating basic medical conditions and providing nutritional treatment.
- Anthropometric kit: provides the necessary equipment for measuring and weighing children during nutritional surveys and for monitoring children admitted to an inpatient or outpatient nutritional centre.
- Registration module contains medical stationary and identification materials.
- Equipment module: contains distribution materials.
- Medical suppliesmodule: includes items for stabilising children before transferring them to an inpatient unit.
- Diagnostic materialmodule: contains a glucometer, haemoglobinometer, and HIV rapid tests. Additional HIV rapid tests are included in the kit to cover 250 patients, as per MSF HIV protocols.
- Medicines modules: contain medicines for systematic treatment at an outpatient nutritional centre and medicines to stabilise a child and start emergency treatment before transferring to an inpatient unit.
- Therapeutic food:optional. Please, contact your OC Nutrition advisor to select items and quantities to be ordered.
- Checklists (CL): include medicines that may be needed for the most common medical conditions. Quantities are based on 250 malnourished children presenting to an outpatient nutrition centre. These lists will help to check if these medicines are already available at the project level and/or if an additional order is needed.
Instructions for use
- The modules and/or items that are optional must be ordered separately. They are NOT automatically sent with the kit.
- A separate order must be placed for psychotropic drugs and narcotics (KMEDMNUTO35C). Contact your supply centre for the import procedure of these medicines (Cf Introduction in the Medical catalogue: Narcotic and psychotropic medicines under international control)
- As soon as the ambulatory feeding centre is operational, consumption data should be used to calculate the next replenishment order.
Precautions for Use
This kit should be used and supervised by trained staff who are able to identify medical complications that require referral to an inpatient unit (such as dehydration, severe infections, severe anaemia, shock, etc.), as well as basic medical conditions that should be treated at the outpatient level. Staff should have a thorough knowledge of the nutritional treatment to be provided to patients.
