Form
Split air conditioners are composed of an indoor wall-mounted evaporator unit connected to an outdoor condensing unit by copper pipes. They also include an electrical power and communication cable between the two units, a condensate drainpipe, and a remote controller.
Types of split ACs:
- Inverter vs non-inverter: Inverter ACs require much lower starting current and will run more efficiently overall and are therefore preferable when available.
- Cooling only vs reversible heat pumps: heat pumps can cool and heat by reversing the refrigeration circuit. Many split ACs are heat pumps but some are cooling only ACs.
Size/Capacity:
Standard sizes are expressed in cooling capacity:
- 1 Ton = 1.5 HP = 12,000 BTU = 3.5 kW cooling capacity
- 1.5 Ton = 2 HP = 18,000 BTU = 5.3 kW cooling capacity
- 2 Ton = 2.5 HP = 24,000 BTU = 7.0 kW cooling capacity
Types of refrigerant gas:
Most ACs or heat pumps use R410a refrigerant gas, which comes pre-charged in the unit. Older models may still use R22, and should be avoided. Some newer model may be available with improved refrigerants such as R32, which is less environmentally destructive. Refrigerants are generally not interchangeable. It's important to select a system that runs on a refrigerant that is available locally in case it needs to be refilled.
Efficiency Rating:
The efficiency of an air conditioner is expressed as the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) either expressed as the [W of cooling / W of power input] or in [Btu per hr of cooling / W of power input]. The higher the EER, the better the efficiency is.
Fit
The indoor (evaporator) is wall mounted at about 2.5 meters from the ground.
The outdoor unit (condenser) can be mounted to anti-vibration pads on the floor or can be wall-mounted with mounting brackets which must be purchased seperately.
