LIME, powder

Definition

Chemical used to cover decomposing organic matter in order to prevent the smell of putrefaction and avoid attracting flies and vultures. Lime is also used for pH adjustment.

Instructions for use

Dead bodies

If burial at a depth of more than 1 metre is not possible, spread lime at the bottom of the grave and over the body (1 kg of lime per 10 kg of body weight).

Waste dumps

If burying or incinerating waste is not possible, cover it with a little earth and spread lime over the top.

Excreta

If covering excreta with earth or ash is not possible, spread lime daily in defecation trenches.

Remarks

  • Powdered quicklime and slaked lime may be used interchangeably. Quicklime is less expensive and denser, and a 25 % smaller quantity will produce the same effect, but it can cause burns on moist skin.
  • Hydraulic lime (lime which hardens in contact with water and is used as a mortar) is not suitable.
  • Beware of confusion with chlorinated lime which is a source of chlorine and not a type of lime.

Precautions for Use

Lime irritates the skin and is dangerous to the eyes (in case of contact with lime, eyes must be washed immediately and abundantly with water to avoid irreversible damage and possible blindness). Lime dust is dangerous to the eyes and the respiratory tract.

Spreading must be performed by well-briefed and equipped staff (gloves, boots, goggles, overalls).

Lime should only be spread in places out of reach of children and protected from wind dispersal.

Storage

  • Store separately from food and beverage
  • Store in a dry, cool and well ventilated space
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Close bags tightly after use.

Dispose of contents and container in accordance with all local, regional, national and international regulations.
