Definition

Device for measuring the middle-upper arm circumference in adults (18 years and older), pregnant or breastfeeding women and the elderly.

The MUAC is particularly sensitive to acute weight loss, since it reflects peripheral muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue degradation. A circumference < 160 mm indicates a risk of mortality. The MUAC provides a rapid assessment of the nutritional status of adults and is increasingly used as a method to identify adults requiring immediate treatment.

  • Flexible but non extensible polypropylene, washable

Instructions for use

The brachial circumference is always measured on the left arm, halfway between the shoulder and the elbow. The arm should be relaxed along the body.

  • Insert the strip following the arrows to form a bracelet
  • Slip the bracelet over the wrist and slide it halfway up the arm
  • Tighten the bracelet in the middle of the arm. Make sure it is not too tight or too loose.
  • Read the number that appears completely in the window
