Definition

Device for measuring the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) in children aged 6-59 months enabling rapid diagnosis of acute malnutrition and facilitating the detection of children at high risk of mortality.

Used for rapid nutritional assessments, nutritional surveys and screening for acute malnutrition in the community, by parents, and in medical facilities.

  • Multicolour tape with a reading window
  • Dimensions: ± 25 mm x 290 mm
  • Graduations every 1 mm
  • Cut-off point for severe acute malnutrition: 115 mm
  • 3 coloured sections (red, orange and green) enabling illiterate people to assess the nutritional status of children and refer them accordingly
  • The colour classification is useful for mass screening (children in the green zone are not referred for weight/height check)
  • The meaning of the colours is explained on the inner side of the bracelet

Instructions for use

The brachial circumference is always measured on the left arm, at the midpoint between the shoulder and the elbow. The arm should be in relaxed position alongside the body.

  • Place the strip in position, following the arrows to create a bracelet.
  • Slide the tape over the child's wrist and move it halfway up the arm.
  • Adjust the tape to fit snugly around the middle of the arm, ensuring it is neither too tight nor too loose.
  • Read the number indicated at the arrow.
