V0302 - Clinical dimensional parameters measuring devices
European Medical Device Nomenclature (EMDN) is the nomenclature of use by manufacturers when registering their medical devices in the EUDAMED database. EMDN is characterised by its alphanumeric structure that is established in a seven-level hierarchical tree.
The product is part of at least one Kit.
A kit is a collection of products (medical and/or logistic) that are needed for a certain intervention in emergency. The choice and quantity of the articles reflects the MSF protocols for this specific situation. The use of Kits allows to start an intervention without a detailed evaluation.
MID-UPPER ARM CIRCUMFERENCE TAPE (MUAC) paediatric
Definition
Device for measuring the middle-upper arm circumference in children aged 6-59 months (or according to pre-determined length/height limits when age determination is difficult), enabling rapid diagnosis of acute malnutrition, and therefore detection of children with a high risk of mortality.
Used for initial assessments, nutritional surveys and screening for malnutrition in a community.
Specifications
Technical specifications
- Flexible but not extensible polypropylene, washable
- Multicolour tape with a reading window
- Dimensions: ± 25 mm x 290 mm
- Graduations every 1 mm
- Cut-off point for severe acute malnutrition: 115 mm
- 3 coloured sections (red, orange and green) allowing illiterate people to assess the nutritional status of children and refer them accordingly
- The colour classification is useful for mass screening (children in the green zone are not referred for weight/height check)
- The meaning of the colours is explained in the inner side of the bracelet
Instructions for use
The brachial circumference is always measured on the left arm, at the midpoint between the shoulder and the elbow. The arm should be in a relaxed position alongside the body.
- Place the strip in position following the arrows to create a bracelet.
- Slide the tape over the child's wrist and move it halfway up the arm.
- Adjust the tape to fit snugly in the middle of the arm, ensuring it is neither too tight nor too loose.
- Read the number indicated at the arrow.
Cut of point | Colour | Classification |
< 115 mm | Red | Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) |
≥115 mm and < 125 mm | Orange | Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) |
≥ 125 mm | Green | No acute malnutrition |
MSF requirements
Model developed by MSF nutritionists in 2017.
- the threshold for severe acute malnutrition remains at 115 mm.
- the graduation is accurate to 1 mm instead of 2 mm.
- the reading is done with a ruler instead of a window.
- there are 3 colours instead of 4, according to UNICEF standards.
