First choice article, as is fluphenazine decanoate. The choice between the two articles will depend on the availability of the product, and/or previous experience and oral treatment (to avoid changing the treatment).

Therapeutic Action
Long-acting antipsychotic (neuroleptic)
Indications
Chronic psychosis, including schizophrenia, following stabilised treatment with oral haloperidol.
Instructions for use
1 mg oral haloperidol = 10 mg decanoate haloperidol
Must be given as deep IM injection.
It is recommended to order biperiden (or trihexyphenidyl) together with haloperidol decanoate, to be given in the event of extrapyramidal disorders.
Long-acting decanoate haloperidol should be the drug of choice for patients on oral haloperidol treatment.

Precautions for Use
Do not administer in children under 15 years of age.
Can be used during pregnancy, but not during breast feeding.
Do not prescribe long-acting antipsychotic for prompt control of acute psychotic symptom.
Administer with caution and carefully monitor use in elderly patients and patients with hypokalaemia, hypotension, hyperthyroidism, renal or hepatic impairment, history of seizures.
