KIT, NUTRITION INPATIENT, 50 patients 2021

Material to set-up and run an inpatient therapeutic feeding centre (ITFC) for acutely malnourished children. The kit 2021 replaces the previous kit.

This kit is composed of different parts allowing the set-up of an inpatient therapeutic feeding centre (ITFC) to treat 50 acutely malnourished children according to MSF nutritional protocols and MSF Paediatric Guidelines. It was designed on the premise that there is not an existing or planned paediatric inpatient ward in the project, so it could be a self-sustaining centre treating medical complications and providing nutritional treatment.

• The anthropometric kit provides the necessary equipment for measuring and weighing children during nutritional surveys or for monitoring children admitted to an in-patient or outpatient nutritional centres.
• The registration module contains medical stationary and identification materials.
• The equipment module contains cooking and distribution equipment.
• The medical supplies module contains disposable items for single use and dressings for malnutrition-related skin disorders, including kwashiorkor skin lesions.
• The diagnostic material module contains a glucometer, a haemoglobinometer and HIV rapid tests.
• The medicines module contains items to treat the most common medical complications.
• The resuscitation module contains an oxygen concentrator, an oximeter, a suction pump and the items needed to perform resuscitations.

Check wether the hospital already has the power supply for the oxygen concentrator and other resuscitation machines. if not, a power supply module, generator and voltage limiter must be ordered separately (see related articles).

Therapeutic food is optional. Items and quantities have been calculated according to MSF nutritional protocols for 50 children for 3 months:

• 45 children > 6 months with an average weight of 7 kg:
• 65% in phase 1 (100kcal/kg/day): 30 children on F-75
• 30% in transition phase (135kcal/kg/day): 4 children on F-100 and 10 children on RUTF
• 5% in phase 2 inpatient (170kcal/kg/day): 3 children on RUTF paste and 3 children on BP100
• 5 children < 6 months: average weight 4 kg:(calculation based on "no possibility of breastfeeding"):
• Infant formula 1st age divided into 3 phases (100Kcal/kg/day, 120 kcal/kg/day, 150 kcal/kg/day)

• The modules and/or items which are optional must be ordered separately. They are NOT automatically sent with the kit.
• It is necessary to place a separate order with the psychotropic drugs and narcotics (KMEDMNUTI36C). Contact your supply centre for the import procedure of those medicines (Cf Introduction in the Medical catalogue:: Narcotic and psychotropic medicines under international control)
• As soon as the ITFC is operational, the consumption data should be used to calculate the next replenishment order.
