Instructions for use

Reconstitute the 500 mg powder vial with 4.8 ml of water for injection to obtain a reconstituted solution at 100 mg/ml azithromycin.

Shake the vial until complete dissolution of the contents. The reconstituted solution must be clear and free of visible particles.

Dilute the reconstituted solution in 250 or 500 ml of 0.9% NaCl, 5% dextrose or Ringer Lactate to obtain a concentration at 1.0 or 2 mg/ml azithromycin.

The diluted solution must be given as slow IV infusion (over 60 min):

  • Children: 10-12 mg/kg (max. 500 mg/d), once daily
  • Adults: 500 mg, once daily

Switch to oral azithromycin as soon as the patient can swallow, until the full course of treatment (14 days) is completed.

IV azithromycin is much better tolerated by patients than IV erythromycin and it is administered once daily.

Precautions for Use

Do not administer as an IV bolus or IM injection.

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin or any of the macrolide or ketolide antibiotics.

Do not administer in children < 6 weeks of age.

Storage

  • Below 25°C ‐ Protect from sunlight ‐ Protect from humidity
  • After reconstitution and dilution, use the solution immediately.
