ARTESUNATE + ARGININE

Therapeutic Action

Antimalarial, artemisinine derivative

Indications

Severe malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum

Instructions for use

Combi-pack containing:

  • 1 powder vial of 60 mg artesunate
  • 1 ampoule containing 3 ml of 0.84% (8.4 mg/ml) sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) + 2% (20 mg/ml) arginine for reconstitution

This new formulation of artesunate means there is no need to separately reconstitute and then dilute the artesunate powder. It allows to administer artesunate in a simplest and faster way with less risk of preparation errors.

Refer to the instructions detailed in Injectable artesunate FOR SEVERE MALARIA ONLY (see articles related) for reconstitution and administration.

ARTESUNATE 60mg, powder,vial + NaHCO3 5% 1ml + NaCl 0.9% 5ml (DINJARTS6V-) and ARTESUNATE 60mg, pwd vial + ARGININE 2%/NaHCO3 0.84% 3ml (DINJARTS6V3) are interchangeable and weight-dosing is the same. Missions should progressively shift from DINJARTS6V- to DINJARTS6V3.

Must be given as slow IV or IM injection.

Precautions for Use

Never administer by IV infusion.

Do not use water for injection for reconstitution of the artesunate powder. Use the diluents contained in the 3 ml ampoule provided.
